Bookish Things I’m Thankful For

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  Since this week is Thanksgiving, our topic is thankfulness.  There are a lot of things that I have to be thankful for today.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

GoodreadsGoodreads – I’m thankful that I’ve started to take advantage of all the goodness that Goodreads has to offer this year.  It is such a useful tool.  I wouldn’t have found all the amazing books this year that I’ve read without it.

Amazon.comAmazon.com $1.99 book sales.  I absolutely love Amazon.com’s monthly book sales.  Get Kindle books that are on my TBR for only $1.99?  Yes, please!  I’m really thankful for this cheap way to get books.

TwitterI’m thankful for Book Twitter.  Where else can you hear from your favorite authors?  I learn about tons of new releases this way too.  Not only can I hear from some of my favorite authors, but I’ve also met many nice unpublished authors here as well.

Top Ten TuesdayI’m thankful for Top Ten Tuesday.  Top Ten Tuesday posts are so fun!  I love to read about all of the things my fellow readers have to say about books.

libraryI’m thankful for my local public library.  They always have books for me to read and they have meeting spaces available for my Russian meetup group.  I absolutely love this place.

I’m thankful for writing.  I’ve written a lot this year!  If you would have asked me in January what I would have accomplished by the end of the year, I would never have guessed that I would have written more than 250,000 words this year.  That’s a quarter of a million words!  Thanks to all of the amazing people on Twitter and on the internet giving advice, my writing has gotten better this year as well.  I have to be thankful for that.

Writer with catsI’m thankful for my favorite authors. Where would we be without all the wonderful books that they create for us? I’ve seen people bad-mouth authors before, and I wonder why they would do this if they want them to create more books? Nobody has to write books. The big names probably don’t need the money, and the smaller names could probably make more money elsewhere. So for all of you amazing writers that I’ve read this year, thank you for what you do.

Kindle PaperwhiteI’m thankful for my Kindle – I like hardback books, but it’s really easy to check out books on the Kindle.  I actually don’t really have a preference, although for the same price, I’d rather have a physical copy.

NetgalleyI’m thankful for ARCs!  This year my life has taken a lot of twists and turns.  In February I got a note from someone asking me to continue writing  Like Normal People, and shortly after that I found that Goodreads had amazing lists to help you find books, and then I found out that people actually let you read books ahead of time if you’re willing to review them!  ARCs provide me with a steady stream of things to read, and it’s also pretty cool to get to read a book before everybody else does.  So these are definitely something I’m thankful for.

Finally, I’m thankful for you!  Yes, you!  I’m thankful that you came to visit my little site today.  I’m thankful when you leave comments.  Most of the people that leave comments here are book bloggers, and I’m thankful for your book blogs.  They help me find new books to read and give me ideas and inspiration.  Plus, most of you are so darned nice!  There have been a lot of things about this year that have sucked, but the biggest thing this year that has been completely awesome is being part of this writing/reading/blogging community.  I haven’t been doing book blogging for that long, but I’m glad that I’ve found you.

Thank you for stopping by this week.  What are you thankful for?  Next week on Top Ten Tuesday, we’re going to talk about platonic relationships in books.  Sisters, brothers, moms, dads, most books have them somewhere!

  1. I won’t pretend a huge smile didn’t grace my face, when I saw $1.99 book sales. That’s my hot price, and I scan my wishlist everyday for those. I love TTT too. It’s always fun to hear about a million books in one day, and maybe get to fangirl together over the same books. NG/EW and the library help me fund my reading habit. I am at 378 for this year. I would never be able to afford that many books.

    1. I usually just check out the monthly deals for the $1.99 sales, but I should check the daily ones too. $1.99 won’t even get you a salad at Wal-Mart. I figure if a book has been on my TBR and it’s at that price, I’ll get it for $1.99.

    1. There was a post a month or so ago about some author upset that people were reading her books at libraries. It wasn’t very popular.

    1. Been busy today and haven’t had a chance to visit the lists today, but I’m looking forward to seeing your list and others!

    1. Amazon.com has these “Kindle Monthly deals” that they post every month, and a lot of the books are $1.99. There hasn’t really been anything that I’ve had to have for a couple of months now, but when I do find books I think are interesting, I try to post them here. Either way, you should check them out because they have a lot of books out every month.

Sometimes if you’re following book Twitter, you’ll see books go on sale for a limited time too. That’s how I got Ace of Shades for $1.99 and A Thousand Perfect Notes for $.99. I’m hoping to see something up for sale on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but I haven’t seen anything interesting yet. I just put $125 into my Amazon account so I’m ready for the sales!

    1. LOL I think that’s common with a lot of people. So far, I’ve managed to maintain a 90% feedback rating there. I tend to only ask for about one book a week, and a lot of my requests are ignored, LOL. I read early on that if you request too many books that can be dangerous because they might give you your wish, so I’ve managed to have a little self control. Since I usually do one ARC review a week (NaNoWriMo is throwing off my plans a little, but this is an exception) I use the “Read Now” books to get books for times I don’t have a book that I can review right away.

  2. I love these kind of posts so much, they make me so happy <3 I'm also so, very thankful for goodreads because I have no idea how i'd keep track of my books and everything else without it, it's just SO useful! And wow, you've written sooooooo much this year, that's so incredible! 😀 I hope this will continue this end of the year and the upcoming year as well 😀

    1. I’m hoping so too. It’s just been an amazing year as far as books are concerned. Some of the other things, not so much, but with books, it’s like all these doors are magically being kicked open. I have four people that want to beta-read my book and a published author is probably going to be my critique partner. I originally was going to write a story about an evil czarina and her daughter in a Russian-like society, but shelved that book in favor of writing the story that came to me in a dream. Coincidentally, the royal family in my book was given names of Russian czars… I just realized that I can tie in the original story idea to the story I’m writing right now (in another series) in a way that makes complete sense.
