Fall 2020 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! And happy first day of fall too! Summer is my favorite time of year, which makes me sad, but I do love putting together my seasonal TBRs (even though my track record has been poor this last year; it might be do with having an unemployed husband who’s around all the time). Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

But first, let’s see how I did during the summer:

  • Conquest – Celest Harte: Read
  • Descendant of the Crane – Joan He: Read
  • Keeper – Kim Chance: Unread
  • Opposite of Always – Jason Reynolds: Read
  • Mirror Gate – Jeff Wheeler: Unread
  • The Bride Test – Helen Huang: Read
  • Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour – Morgan Matson: Read
  • The First Hostage – Joel C. Rosenberg: Unread
  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely – Brigid Kemmerer: Unread
  • Jo & Laurie – Melissa de La Cruz & Margaret Stohl: Read

It was only a 60% success rate. I did read finish the Twilight series during the summer and I had some ARCs. I’ve started to include some of my ARCs starting this list, because for now, I’m just not getting as much reading done, although I’m still caught up on my reading challenge.

So here’s what I hope to read this fall:

Skyhunter

I don’t know if it’s considered cheating because I have the ARC and I’m already 43% done with the book, but Skyhunter was going to be on my fall TBR anyway (it comes out September 29th), so I figure I should put it up here. So far, it’s really good! I wasn’t a huge fan of the cover initially, but now that I’m reading it, it makes a lot more sense.

Keeper cover

I didn’t finish Keeper this summer, so it’s carrying over to the fall. Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to read it before winter.

The First Hostage

The First Hostage is another carry-over from the summer. It’s been a couple of years since I read the first book in the series, so I might want to reread the first book. Maybe I’ll get this one on audiobook since I have a couple credits and I don’t have a physical copy of this book.

Mirror Gate cover

Mirror Gate is another book I didn’t read over the summer. It looks like a summery book, so maybe I’ll try to read this in October when the weather is still sometimes nice. It did snow a couple weeks ago, allowing Olaf to experience the summer, but the weather is nice again.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

The final book I didn’t get the chance to read over the summer was A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Let’s see if I can get to all four of these books.

A Sky Beyond the Storm

I have to wait until September to read A Sky Beyond the Storm, which doesn’t give me a lot of time to read this in the fall, but I pre-ordered this book and will probably start reading it on December 1st.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

How I ended up with an ARC of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is beyond me. But it comes out on October 6, so I’m going to start this as soon as I finish Skyhunter. With the way I’ve been reading so slowly lately, I should finish it just prior to its release date.

Make Up Break Up

I also have an ARC of Make Up Break Up, but I’m on Sandhya Menon’s street teams so I know why I got this. This book doesn’t come out until February, but if I put it here right on my Fall TBR, I’ll be able to read about it in plenty of time to gush about it prior to its release. She also has a Christmas novella coming out, Booked for Christmas, that sounds really cute.

The Red Scrolls of Magic

Lucky me, I got a copy of The Red Scrolls of Magic for free! The Kindle version was on sale for $1.99 at Amazon.com, and I had a $5 credit on Amazon after they had a promotion where they gave you free money for reading on the Kindle. There were two slots open on the TBR lottery, and this was one of the books I drew. Cassandra Clare’s books are always good (if not long, haha).

Talon

Talon was the other book I drew out of the TBR lottery. This has an amazing cover! I got this one on sale too, a while back, which is pretty good, because my book budget is almost zero right now. Fortunately, our library is amazing and has bought every book I’ve recommended to them, but since I already own this, I don’t have to worry about that.

So that’s ten! Will I be able to read them all this quarter? Hopefully. Since I included most of the ARCs I have, there’s a better chance I’ll read these than the summer TBR books.

So what do you plan on reading this season? I’m sure I’ll discover many more books this week. Next week we’re going to talk about favorite book quotes. We’ve done topics like this before, so I’ll try to come up with some new ones.

Summer 2020 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! Another week has snuck by… but it’s Tuesday again, which means Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl). Today we’re talking about our TBRs! I love TBR week, although lately I haven’t been doing quite as well on my TBRs lately, but we’ll see that in a moment.

How did I do on my Spring TBR?

  • Between Burning Worlds – Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell: Read
  • Chosen Ones – Veronica Roth: Read
  • Malediction – Katerina King: Read
  • Conquest – Celeste Harte: Unread
  • The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – Suzanne Collins: Read
  • 1453 – Roger Crowley: Read
  • Descendent of the Crane – Joan He: Unread
  • Keeper – Kim Chance: Unread
  • 99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne: Read
  • Tell Me Everything – Sarah Enni: Read

So this quarter I had a 70% success rate. I might have finished a couple more, but I started reading the Twilight series.

So what do I hope to read this summer? There are no new must-read books for me, so the books listed here are: 1) the three I didn’t read in the spring and 2) books I picked from the TBR lottery.

Conquest cover

Celeste Harte is one of the hosts of Character Chaos on Twitter. I’ve been wanting to read Conquest for a while. It was on my spring TBR, after all! I really want to get to this one first. I have a few ARCs to read that I need to get to, but this is probably the first book from my TBR I intend to conquer.

Descendant of the Crane cover

Descendant of the Crane has been on my list for quite a while too. I wanted to read this one since it was an ARC (I wasn’t approved). Let’s hope I can get to this one this summer.

Keeper cover

Kim Chance used to host Chance2Connect on Twitter once a month. Sadly, June’s Chance2Connect was the last one, but I still want to read her book, Keeper. This was on my list of Spring 2020 books, but I didn’t get around to it.

Opposite of Always cover

Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds has been on my radar for quite a while now. It sounds so interesting! He read some of his book at a Zoom event a couple months ago, and I liked what I heard so far!

Mirror Gate cover

Mirror Gate is the second book in The Harbinger series. I read Storm Glass last year, and I bought the rest of the series when it was on sale on Amazon.com (gotta love those $1.99 books) but I haven’t read past the first book yet.

The Bride Test has been on my radar for a while too. I liked The Kiss Quotient, and am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour

I first heard of Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour from my fellow Top Ten Tuesday bloggers. It sounded good, so I added it to my TBR. It won the lottery for this summer, and it seems like such a summery book!

The First Hostage

It’s been a very long time since I read The Third Target, which is the first book in the J.B. Collins series. The First Hostage is the second book, and it won the TBR lottery for this season. It’s definitely different than the other books on this list, but it should be a nice change of pace. I love Joel C. Rosenberg’s books.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

I got A Curse So Dark and Lonely on sale quite a while ago, but I haven’t read it yet. This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Hopefully it will be really good!

Jo & Laurie

I never read Little Women (I have an antique copy and I think I read one page before I lost interest; I was really young at the time I tried to read it though). This was one of the books on Bookish First a month or so ago, and I liked the beginning (sadly, I was too late to use my points to get a copy). I do hope to read Jo & Laurie this summer though.

So these are the books I hope to read this summer! What books do you hope to read? Next week is Top Ten Tuesday’s 10th Anniversary! I don’t know what option I’m going to pick yet.

Most Recent TBR Adds

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means! Time for another Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl). Today’s topic is supposed to be “Books I’ve Added to my TBR and Forgotten Why,” but I usually know why I add books to my TBR, so that wouldn’t be a very good list. Instead, I’ll talk about the most recent books to my TBR. There were a few books I recently added to Goodreads because I read them a long time ago, but I’m not going to include them here.

Twilight

I’ve never read Twilight before (or seen any of the movies), and wasn’t planning to. After all the book came out 15 years ago and people have mixed feelings about it today. And to be honest? I’m reading it right now and I have to say, while it is entertaining, their relationship has some problems. But with Midnight Sun coming out, I figure, why not read the series? It’s kind of fun to be reading something that lots of your book friends are reading.

The Bell Curve

I’ve been making a point to read more nonfiction lately. So along with Twilight, I’ve been reading a couple chapters from The Bell Curve every day. It’s definitely an academic book. A few of the chapters are a little controversial, and I have to wonder what direction some of the trends they found went in after this book went to print about 25 years ago.

Of Silver and Shadow

Of Silver and Shadow was an ARC I got from Netgalley. I was in a hurry to read it, thinking it was coming out at the end of May, and then I discovered that it wouldn’t come out until 2021 (likely because of Coronavirus).

Malediction cover

My friend Katerina King wrote Malediction, which came out last fall. I’m not sure why I didn’t add it to my Goodreads TBR sooner than I did.

The Camelot Betrayal

I read The Guinevere Deception last fall, and I’m looking forward to reading Kiersten White’s sequel, The Camelot Betrayal. This series has some great covers! I can’t wait to read this one.

There’s going to be a sequel to Veronica Roth’s Chosen Ones. It’s still untitled, but I plan to read it. So I added it to my TBR.

Forged in Fire and Stars was a book recommendation given to me. It has a beautiful cover, and it sounds interesting. This book came out last month, but I haven’t had the opportunity to read it yet.

Jo & Laurie

I never read Little Women, but I had the opportunity to read the first few pages of Jo & Laurie and it was pretty good. I got to meet Melissa de la Cruz in March, and the book seemed interesting when she described it.

The Summer of Impossibilities cover

I got The Summer of Impossibilities as an ARC. I suppose I could have added this book to last week’s Top Ten Tuesday, which talked about books that give off summer vibes.

Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare doesn’t have a cover yet, and it’s also not available for pre-order, but it’s already on my TBR. I like all the Shadowhunter books, so I’ll probably want to read this as soon as it comes out.

So these are my most recent TBR adds! Next week we’re talking about our summer TBRs!

Spring 2020 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! It’s Tuesday again, and time for another edition of Top Ten Tuesday! I hope everybody is staying safe with that nasty virus going around. Today we’re talking about our Spring TBRs. Too soon! I didn’t get the chance to finish a lot of my Winter TBR, so a lot of the books on my list this quarter will be books that were on my list last time. But not all! There are several new books coming out and those are taking up most of the space made available from the books I did read.

So how did I do on my Winter TBR?

  • The Kingdom of Back – Marie Lu: Read
  • A Treason of Thorns – Laura E. Weymouth: Read
  • Light From Distant Stars – Shawn Smucker: Read
  • Chain of Gold – Cassandra Clare: Read
  • Descendant of the Crane – Joan He: Unread
  • Keeper – Kim Chance: Unread
  • 99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne: Unread
  • Tell Me Everything – Sarah Enni: Unread
  • Disappearing Earth – Julia Phillips: Read
  • Broken Throne – Victoria Aveyard: Read

Even though I didn’t get all of these books read, I still read enough that I’ll be able to read the spring books I’m getting, so there’s that.

I’ll start by going over the new books I’m adding to my TBR for this quarter.

Between Burning Worlds cover

I’m so excited for Between Burning Worlds, which is coming out on March 24th! Jessica Brody was supposed to be at The Tattered Cover on the 25th, but the bookstore has been temporarily closed for the coronavirus, so I’ll be reading this book at home and I’ll have to meet her some other time. I’m rereading Sky Without Stars, the first book in this duology, right now to get ready.

The Chosen Ones cover

Veronica Roth is one of my favorite authors, and I’m looking forward to her adult debut, Chosen Ones, which comes out on April 7th! I pre-ordered this book back in August and can’t wait.

Malediction cover

My friend Katerina King wrote a book, Malediction, and I haven’t had the chance to read it yet. I meant to read it in December, before I started reading books for my winter TBR, but I didn’t get around to it. I definitely want to read it, so I’m adding it to my spring TBR.

Conquest cover

Another friend of mine, Celeste Harte, has also written a book, Conquest. I bought the electronic copy, then I won a paperback copy, but I plan on reading it over the next few months.

Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes cover

I wasn’t initially going to pre-order The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which is a Hunger Games prequel, because it was too expensive. I’m not interested enough in this book to pay $25 for it, but the price has gone down, and I’ve pre-ordered it. This book is supposed to come out on May 19th.

1453 cover

Because I didn’t finish all the books on my winter TBR, there’s only one new TBR lottery book this quarter: 1453 by Roger Crowley. It’s a nonfiction book about the fall of Constantinople.

Descendant of the Crane cover

Descendant of the Crane was on my Winter 2019/20 TBR, and since I didn’t get to it then, I’m going to try to get to it now. Hopefully I’ll have more reading time in this quarter. Perhaps I will with this coronavirus thing going on?

Keeper cover

Keeper was another TBR lottery winner from the previous quarter that I didn’t read. I have this one on Kindle (like Descendant of the Crane) so hopefully I’ll get to this one.

99 Percent Mine cover

Sally Thorne is a new-to-me author still, but I got 99 Percent Mine for $1.99 when it was on sale on Amazon.com. It was also a TBR lottery winner from the winter that I didn’t read. So onto the spring it goes.

Tell Me Everything cover

I didn’t get the chance to read Tell Me Everything, and I requested this book from my library last week. The book was on the shelf in the library, but not one of the branches I normally go to. Well, the library is closed now, so I guess I have to wait for it to reopen again? Either that or buy a copy. I have other books on my shelf to read, so unless the coronavirus keeps things closed for months, I’ll probably just wait.

So what books are on your TBR for the spring? Were you able to read all your Winter TBR books? Are you staying inside and reading books? Next week is a genre freebie and I haven’t decided what to do with that yet.

Books on My TBR I Predict Will Be Five Star Reads

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! It’s Tuesday again, and that means it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about Books that I Predict will be Five Star Reads. I’m writing this post on January 11th, and I may have read some of these books prior to the time this gets posted. Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl!

The Kingdom of Back cover

This book is arriving tomorrow! I’m so excited for that. I expect The Kingdom of Back will be a book I’ll love, because I love almost everything that Marie Lu writes.

Chain of Gold cover

Another book I expect to love is Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare. I love the Shadowhunter books and I expect that this will be another amazing story. I’ve already seen Cordelia and James Herondale in some stories and can’t wait to see more of them. I already have Chain of Thorns, Chain of Iron, and the untitled Wicked Powers books on my TBR because I know I’ll enjoy them.

Today Tonight Tomorrow cover

I’m looking forward to Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon! This is an enemies-to-lovers story set during graduation. I’ve been interested in reading some of her stories before, but this one really sticks out to me.

The Scorpio Races cover

In November I plan on reading The Scorpio Races (occasionally I’ll plan to read something far in advance, especially if the book happens over a specific date). Based on the other books I’ve read by Ms. Stiefvater, I expect this one to be five stars.

Skyhunter

What’s it about? I don’t know. But it’s Marie Lu. I gave Batman only four stars but I’m not really into superheroes. She wrote this beautiful Instagram post the other day about going out into the backyard with her son.

The Chosen Ones cover

Here’s another book I can almost guarantee five stars to based on the author alone. Her, Marie Lu, and Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books are almost always going to be good.

King of Scars cover

Why have I not read this book yet? I loved the Grishaverse books and expect this one to be awesome too. I probably wouldn’t have to wait long for this one at the library (if at all) yet there are so many other books out there crowding for my time.

If it’s a book about gamers, I’m probably going to like it. I have this ARC and am excited to read it. Hopefully I’ll finish it before its release date on January 28th. I didn’t read a ton of books in November and December and am a little behind in some of the books I want to read, but I’ll probably get to this soon.

Onyx cover

The first book in the Lux series, Obsidian, was a five star read, and I predict that the second book in the series, Onyx, will be amazing as well.

Between Burning Worlds cover

March is going to be an amazing month for books, I predict. I have three? (I think, there may be four) books pre-ordered for March 3rd, and then there’s also Between Burning Worlds, which comes out on the 24th (another pre-order). So looking forward to finding out what happens to Chatine. I’m glad I read Les Misérables last fall. Out of the (several, now) books I’ve read inspired by that book, I think this one has the most in common with it. I’m looking forward to this and a reread of Sky Without Stars, so I can compare it to the original Victor Hugo masterpiece.

Winter 2019/2020 TBR

Hello! It’s Top Ten Tuesday today, and it’s time for the quarterly TBR post. I love doing quarterly TBRs because it gives me books to get excited for over the next three months! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl!

I ended up reading everything from my Fall TBR with a few weeks to spare! The books I read for fall were:

  • Rebel – Marie Lu
  • The End and Other Beginnings – Veronica Roth
  • Ninth House – Leigh Bardugo
  • The Beautiful – Renée Ahdieh
  • Always Forever Maybe – Anica Mrose Rissi
  • This Savage Song – Victoria Schwab
  • Call Down the Hawk – Maggie Stiefvater
  • Thousands – Pepper Winters
  • The Queen of Nothing – Holly Black
  • Sea Witch – Sarah Henning

I did the same thing for this winter that I did for the fall. I made a list of books I absolutely needed to read, then I made a list of books I was interested in reading and had a TBR lottery using a random number generator. The TBR lottery idea was adapted from the TBR jar idea I found at Destiny at Howling Libraries. It was just easier for me to list all the books on one sheet of paper than to write them all on slips of paper. There were 66 books in the lottery and 6 were chosen.

In addition to the books listed here I already know I’m going to read 10 Things I Hate About Pinkie and The Vanishing Deep. The first I have an ARC for and the second I pre-ordered the audiobook for.

The Kingdom of Back cover

In May 2018, back when I first learned about ARCs and The Kingdom of Back was supposed to come out this year, I set a goal to get an ARC of this book. Then it looked like I wouldn’t get it… but… eek! It was on Bookish First and I was able to claim one! They have my undying loyalty now. I don’t know when it will arrive, but I’ll probably read it in late December or early January.

A Treason of Thorns cover

Laura E. Weymouth is a sweetheart and I promised her that I’d write her a crossover fanfic with A Treason of Thorns and Sorcery of Thorns. I’m sure they’ve forgotten I’d said I’d do it but I have every intention of writing it. First I have to read the books. I pre-ordered this book but didn’t put it on my TBR so it didn’t get read yet.

Light from Distant Stars

I won Light from Distant Stars as an ARC, but it didn’t arrive until after its release date. So I hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. Since I didn’t get it as an ARC, I couldn’t schedule it with my ARC reads, so it’s going on my TBR instead.

Chain of Gold cover

I thought I was going to have to wait to read Chain of Gold after I finished The Kingdom of Back, but getting the ARC took care of that problem. Now I’ll get to start reading it on March 3rd as soon as the stupid UPS truck arrives (which is about 8 PM… grr). I’m rereading the Shadowhunter books before this book comes out.

Descendant of the Crane cover

The rest of the books on this list, including Descendant of the Crane, were TBR lottery winners. I wanted to read this book before it came out, found it on sale, and haven’t had time to read it yet. It looks like such an amazing book I’m glad I’ll get to read it (yet still sad as I look longingly at the books that didn’t get picked).

Kim Chance is the lovely host of Chance2Connect on Twitter, and when I found her book on sale, I couldn’t pass it up. The second book in this series is already out, but I’ll start with Keeper.

99 Percent Mine cover

I found 99 Percent Mine on sale this summer and had to pick it up. Looking forward to reading it. I haven’t read anything by Sally Thorne before.

Tell Me Everything cover

Tell Me Everything was recommended to me. I don’t have my own copy but my library does. It’s currently available, so I don’t think I’ll have too much difficulty getting this book when I’m ready to read it.

Disappearing Earth cover

The main reason I want to read Disappearing Earth is that it takes place in Russia. I don’t own this one either, and all the copies are out at the library. I put this one on hold and suspended the hold so I can read this sometime after the first of the year. Who knows how many copies the library has?

Broken Throne cover

My library has several copies of Broken Throne available, so it won’t be difficult getting to read the last TBR lottery winner, Broken Throne. It’ll be fun to get back into the Red Queen universe again.

Well, that’s my Winter 2019/2020 TBR! Will you be reading any of these books in the upcoming season? Have you read any of these? Next week we’re going to talk about books I’d hope to find under my tree… well, since my parents are averse to pre-ordering, I’ll probably tweak it slightly.

Books that Lost the Fall 2019 TBR Lottery

Top Ten Tuesday

Hello! Welcome to another week of Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl)! Today we’re supposed to write about “Favorite Things to Eat/Drink While Reading” but water doesn’t sound all that exciting. Instead, I’m doing a post to bridge the gap between last week (Books I Really Want to Read But Haven’t Had Time For Yet) and next week (Books on my Fall 2019 TBR).

I have so many books that I want to read that I’ve resorted to drawing my seasonal TBR choices out of a figurative hat (I actually use a random number generator). There were six books I absolutely had to read as soon as possible (pre-orders), and that left four slots for the fall 2019 TBR lottery. There were 45 books on my list. Here are ten of the books that didn’t make the TBR lottery for this fall.

I got a copy of Listen to Your Heart from the Colorado Teen Literature Conference that I attended earlier this year. I had been hoping to find some time to read it this summer, but I didn’t. And it lost the TBR lottery this time around. Since it’s a summery looking book, unless I find time to slip in another book before the weather starts to chill, I’ll probably wait until next summer to read it.

Onyx cover

I read Obsidian earlier this year, but I still haven’t moved forward in the Lux series. I’ll put this one on the list for the winter TBR and see if it wins.

The Kiss Quotient was good, so I’d like to read The Bride Test also. Well, not right now. Maybe it’ll have better luck in the winter. I think this is a book that would have year-round appeal, at least.

Once & Future, a futuristic King Arthur retelling, was on the list of books I was interested in reading this fall. The odds were not in its favor. Maybe I’ll read it this winter.

Mirror Gate cover

Mirror Gate is the sequel to Storm Glass, a book I read last winter (I remember listening to it while driving through harrowingly snowy roads). Maybe this is one of those series I’m destined to read in the cold.

Three Dark Crowns cover

I found Three Dark Crowns on sale for $1.99 and had to pick it up. Unfortunately, I haven’t found time to read it yet. It looks like fate doesn’t want me to read it yet either.

Shatter Me cover

Despite the creepy eye on the cover, I did pick up a copy of Shatter Me when it was on sale for $1.99. I read A Very Large Expanse of Sea earlier this year, so Tahereh Mafi is no longer a new-to-me author, however, this series is.

Black Wings Beating cover

Will I ever stop buying books on sale? Probably not. Black Wings Beating was another sale book. And it’s another book I won’t read any time soon. Perhaps this book will win the winter lottery.

Wintersong cover

Wintersong has winter right on the cover; so maybe it’s good that I won’t be reading it just yet. I get cold just looking at the cover. Brrr! I’m sure this one will have another chance next quarter.

Meet Cute

Meet Cute seems to have a summery vibe to it, although that’s only from looking at the cover. I’ll probably wait until spring to see if this book wins then. It looks like a cute book, but so do a lot of books that I’d like to read someday.

So those are ten books that I thought about reading this fall, but I probably won’t. I usually schedule one ARC and one book from my seasonal TBR per week, so if I read more than that, I might be able to fit one of these in, but we’ll see. There are other books that didn’t win the TBR lottery that didn’t go here (or were listed last week). Those extra books will be whatever I feel like at the time.

Next week, I’ll post my actual Fall 2019 TBR and we’ll see how I did with my summer 2019 TBR.

Books on my TBR From the Last Ten Years

Hello! It’s Tuesday again, so it’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl). This week was a freebie… at first I had no clue what to do today, but I was inspired by Whimsy Pages to create a list of books from the last ten years that were still on my TBR! I decided to do one book per year, like the one where we listed our favorite books (one per year) that we did on May 28th. I didn’t have a book on my TBR from 2010, but thanks to that week’s list, I was able to find a book that I’d like to read from that year, so now it resides on my TBR as well.

The Maze Runner cover

2009: The Maze Runner

I actually checked this one out of the library, read a couple of paragraphs, and then didn’t come back to it. The book sounds interesting enough, but I was interested in other books at the time. This one remains on my TBR.

2010: Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour

I first heard about this book through Top Ten Tuesday a couple of months ago. It sounds like a good book, so it went onto my TBR.

The Miracle of Freedom cover

2011: The Miracle of Freedom: 7 Tipping Points that Saved the World

I love history, and this book sounds really interesting. This book is about how lucky we are to be living in the world we are today, because there were several turning points in history, that if they turned out differently, could have caused human history to turn out differently.

The Raven Boys cover

2012: The Raven Boys

I talk about how I need to read one of Maggie Stiefvater’s books almost every week. Why haven’t I? So many books, so little time.

There’s actually a readalong going for these books, and I’m really planning on doing it. So maybe I’ll read it this month?

Vicious cover

2013: Vicious

V.E. Schwab is another author I talk about wanting to read. Every. Single. Week. I’ve even purchased some of her books. Yet I haven’t read one of her books yet. Soon.

The Auschwitz Escape

2014: The Auschwitz Escape

I’m pretty sure I’ve liked every single Joel C. Rosenberg book that I’ve read so far. I haven’t read this one yet, but I’d like to. There’s actually several of his more recent books that I haven’t read yet.

Uprooted cover

2015: Uprooted

I still haven’t read anything by Naomi Novik, even though both Uprooted and Spinning Silver look good. Perhaps sometime this year.

The Underground Railroad cover

2016: The Underground Railroad

I hadn’t heard about Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad until last year, but it looks like a really good book. Don’t know when I’ll get around to reading it, but hopefully someday.

Eliza and her Monsters cover

2017: Eliza and her Monsters

I just recently added this book to my TBR, but it looks pretty good and I’d like to read it sooner rather than later.

American Panda cover

2018: American Panda

There are so many amazing books I’ve read from 2018, but one of the books that is still on my list is American Panda. It seems like such a cute book. Why haven’t I read it yet? Probably for the same reasons I haven’t read any of the other books on this list. I’d like to though.

So those are some books from the last ten years that are on my TBR that I haven’t read yet. What are some of the books on your TBR that you have yet to read?

Books on My Spring 2019 TBR

Hello and welcome to another addition of Top Ten Tuesday, where we talk about our favorite books. This week, we’re going to talk about books that we plan to read this spring. As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl!

First, let’s see how I did with my Winter 2018/19 TBR:

  • Empire of Storms/Tower of Dawn — Sarah J. Maas: Read
  • A Thousand Perfect Notes — C.G. Drews: Read
  • Twisted Roots — Shelly Goodman Wright: Read
  • The Girl King — Mimi Yu: Read
  • The Gilded Wolves — Roshani Chokshi: Read
  • The Invisible War — Ailsa Wild et. al.: Read
  • Shadow and Bone — Leigh Bardugo: Read
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses — Sarah J. Maas: Read
  • The Bear and the Nightingale — Katherine Arden: Unread
  • Sky in the Deep — Adrienne Young — Unread

8/10 books isn’t bad. Especially since one of the books on the list is actually composed of two very long books.

So here are some books I want to read this spring:

Kingdom of Ash Cover

I’ve been reading the Throne of Glass books since last summer. I have one more book to go: Kingdom of Ash. The book kind of fell into my cart at Walmart last November, so I don’t have to wait for the library to get it for me.

Ruin and Rising cover

Don’t you love it when you say “I have to read this series” for the longest time, and then you finally get around to reading the series and you love it? Well, I finally read the first two books in the Grisha Verse over the winter, and I just started reading this final book on Sunday night. I have the Six of Crows duology on audiobook to read as soon as I’m done with this one. Then I’ll have to read King of Scars, but there are other authors I want to read too, so I might not get to them this spring.

I pre-ordered The Priory of the Orange Tree, and even though it magically appeared on my Kindle on the evening of February 25th, I still haven’t read it yet. I got Four Dead Queens the same day, and since Four Dead Queens was shorter, I read it first. But it looks like it’s time to read this lovely little dragon book… at least sometime this spring.

The Bear and the Nightingale cover

I still want to read The Bear and the Nightingale. Even though the cover is pretty snowy. Sometimes it snows as late as May or June around here, so if I read it in the early spring, the mood might still match the weather. We just had a blizzard that kept me home from work last week, so the weather might match the cover for a while.

Since I’ve been doing pretty well with actually reading the books that I put on these seasonal TBRs, I figure I might as well roll over this book as well. Hopefully I’ll get to Sky in the Deep soon.

King of Fools cover

I scored an ARC for King of Fools, so I’ll definitely be reading this one, because I hope to write a review before it publishes. Whenever Amanda Foody talks about it on Twitter, I get excited to read it.

Spin the Dawn cover

Another book I have an ARC for is Spin the Dawn. This book doesn’t come out until early July, but I hope to read this one this spring, so I can have the review out a few weeks in advance.

Tiger at Midnight Cover

Ever since I saw a tweet from the author saying that The Tiger at Midnight had Legend as one of its comps, I knew I had to read it. I was hoping to see it on Netgalley, but since it’s not there and the book comes out next month, I pre-ordered it (the Kindle edition was a pretty good deal).

Ghosts of the Shado Market cover

Ghosts of the Shadow Market doesn’t come out until June, but I pre-ordered it months ago. I’ll probably start reading this one on release day. Its 624 pages, so I probably won’t finish it on release day.

The Poppy War cover

I bought The Poppy War last summer when it was on sale. It’s one of the books I meant to read last year, but never got around to. There’s way too many of those. But at least there’s several older books on my Spring TBR, so I’m getting some of them read.

So that’s my Spring TBR. Some old, some new, one that I’ll borrow, some that are blue. What’s on your Spring TBR? Did you manage to read most of the books on your Winter TBR, or do you prefer to wing it most of the time?

Next week I’ll be posting about Audiobooks. I don’t read a lot of audiobooks, so I’ll probably post 10 random thoughts about them in general and ones I’ve read specifically.

TBR Book Tag

Today I’m doing the TBR book tag! I found it over at Kati’s Bookaholic Rambling Reviews but it started over at A Perfection Called Books. It looked like fun to do so here we go!

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Goodreads

Goodreads, of course! I’ve had an account there for a long time, but I only started using it to keep track of my books and look up all the new books coming up recently (like last spring).

Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?

I don’t know? I don’t really care and have no clue. I just click on the book if I want to read it and say “Want to Read”. I buy both. Library check-outs I just go with what’s most convenient and/or quicker. I buy hardcover books from my favorite authors, and ebooks I get when they are on sale, if they’re a pre-order of a book with a big difference in price between that and the hardback, or occasionally some other reason (I have Wildcard in both ebook and print format because the mail was slow and I didn’t want to wait to start reading it).

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

Lately I’ve been choosing books off my seasonal TBR at the beginning of the month. I read ~1 ARC per week and one older book. Sometimes I deviate from it for one reason or another (like if the library gets a book in that’s been on my wait list).

A Book That’s Been On Your TBR List The Longest

Rora cover

Rora has been on my TBR since April 25, 2013. I was reading Foxe’s Book of Martyrs at the time and I thought the story of the religious sect that holed up in the mountains and fought against persecution sounded really good. I finally bought it last year. It was on my summer TBR Wipeout Challenge last year… still haven’t read it. But since I now own a copy, I guess I’m closer to reading it now? I still want to read it, it’s just competing with so many other interesting books.

A Book You Recently Added To Your TBR

Margaret Rogerson and Laura E. Weymouth were talking on Twitter one day about how it would be cool if someone wrote a crossover fanfic between Sorcery of Thorns and A Treason of Thorns, and I said I’d do it. So now I just have to read both books.

This isn’t the first time I promised a book’s author to write a fanfic for them. I wrote Brenna Morgan and the Silver Portal after telling Katie Masters I’d write a fanfic for her. I guess it’s what I do now.

A Book In Your TBR Strictly Because Of Its Beautiful Cover

Wicked Fox cover

What does the Fox say? Well, the Wicked Fox cover says “read me.” They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but the cover can really get you interested in the book. I guess authors don’t always get a lot of say in what their covers are going to look like (if they’re traditionally published) but I’d be okay with that, for the most part, because I think that most of the time, publishers do a much better job at designing covers than I could ever do. If publishers keep coming up with covers like this, I’ll keep buying books.

A Book On Your TBR That You Never Plan on Reading

Hmmm, if it’s on my TBR, then I plan on reading it? Otherwise it goes off the TBR. Sometimes I put might read books on my TBR if I’m trying to win a contest, but if I don’t win the contest and later on decide I don’t want to read it that badly, it leaves the TBR.

An Unpublished Book On Your TBR That You’re Excited For

Rebel pre-cover

Hello, I’m Brooke, and I’m a Legend fangirl. Of course I’m excited for Rebel, the fourth Legend book, to come out. I had this book pre-ordered within an hour of the title reveal. If I end up begging for any ARC this year, this would be the one.

There’s a lot of other books on my TBR that I’m excited about on my TBR, of course, but Legend. I’ve written almost 20% of the Legend fanfics up on AO3, and currently have a novel-length Legend fanfic in editing and another Legend/Warcross fanfic I’m planning. Of course I’m excited about this book.

A Book On Your TBR That Basically Everyone’s Read But You

Court of Thorns and Roses cover

Well, maybe not everybody, because then I wouldn’t still be 26th on the waiting list at the library for it, but a lot of people have read A Court of Thorns and Roses. And I haven’t yet.

I still have to finish reading Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash though. I know they’re not the same series, but I do kinda like to finish a series by one author before I start reading the next. I’m currently reading Tower of Dawn, but if I haven’t finished Kingdom of Ash by the time this becomes available at the library, I’ll have to read this one first (I own both of those). Gotta read the library books as soon as they come in.

A Book On Your TBR That Everyone Recommends To You

Shadow and Bone cover

I wouldn’t say that everybody recommends the Grisha Verse books to me, but these (along with Six of Crows and King of Scars) are books that everybody seems to love, and I’ve wanted to read these books for a while now.

I own the first book in this series, and I’m 3rd on the waiting list for the second book. I’m not worried about not finishing this book before the library makes the second one available to me, because I’m scheduled to read this book next week.

A Book On Your TBR That You’re Dying To Read

So if you’ve read The Wicked King, you know why I’m dying to read The Queen of Nothing. It doesn’t have a cover or anything yet, but yes, I really want to read this book soon. Maybe not quite as badly as I want to read Rebel, but this book is a must-read for me. And it will be one of those books that I end up pre-ordering, just like I did with The Wicked King. I have the other two hardbacks, so hopefully they’ll design a hardback that will look nice with the other two.

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

199 right now.

That’s the TBR Tag! If you want to do this one too, consider yourself tagged.
